Bookkeeping

Every entry balances. Or it does not get in.

It is not the application that guards your double-entry bookkeeping, it is the database. A journal entry that does not balance is refused. That is why the balance sheet in Readybooks is not a report that hopes to be right afterwards.

Simple or completeBook to categories, or to ledger accounts if you prefer

As light or as deep as you want it.

If you are starting out you book to categories with plain names: revenue, purchases, travel. If you have an accountant or have to produce annual accounts, you switch on the full ledger and work with account numbers, day books and journal entries. Underneath it is the same administration.

  • Categories for everyday work
  • A full ledger with your own chart of accounts
  • Day books for sales, purchases, bank and journal
  • Posting rules that fill in repeated entries for you

Books you are happy to show.

Journal lines are never changed or deleted. Close a period and it locks, so nothing can change retrospectively. Every action that matters lands in an audit log that cannot be edited either.

Several companies, neatly apart.

Each administration has its own currency, tax rules, customers, number sequences and ledger. They are separated in the database, with a second lock at row level. You switch with one click and one login, and data never runs together.

The end of the year.

Depreciation keeps running, the balance sheet adds up, and the audit file is ready. Your accountant comes in on their own free account, does their work in the same administration and locks the period afterwards.

  • Assets and depreciation schedules
  • Balance sheet and profit and loss per period
  • Comparison with last year
  • Accruals and journal entries

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to understand double-entry bookkeeping?

No. You can work entirely with categories; Readybooks turns those into balanced journal entries behind the scenes. If you want to see the ledger later, you switch it on and your whole history is already there.

What happens if I make a mistake?

You post a reversal. The original line stays, the correction sits next to it, and both can be found later. That is no harder than editing, and it is the reason an accountant can trust your books.

Can I use my own chart of accounts?

Yes. You start from a standard chart for your country and adjust it: add accounts, rename them or take them out of use. Accounts that have been posted to do not disappear, so older periods keep adding up.

Does my accountant get access?

Yes, free of charge. You invite them with the Bookkeeper role. That account does not count towards your user limit and you can revoke the access whenever you want.
